I’m looking for a non-roadworthy truck to plow my driveway. Roadworthy just drives the price up and I don’t need another on-road vehicle.
Here’s the latest candidate - a 2000 F-350, gas V8. Body rust. Seems to be in working order, just won’t pass inspection. Asking just under $2k, that’s pretty reasonable.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Looks kind of like it had a hard life, but I really don’t care that much. If it runs well enough not to be a hassle, it could prove to save me money over paying someone else to plow the driveway, especially if it’s for more than just this winter. Not to mention, there are often advantages to plowing at a particular time, depending on the storm - and sometimes the best time is later, rather than sooner, like when it rains after a bit of snow.
Anyway. I might have to convince a friend with a trailer to go look at this with me. He knows a ton about Ford trucks, too, but perhaps just as important, he could help me get this one home.

The missing title is a bit of of a pain but not huge deal, depending on your state, and the interior looks surprisingly presentable. If it’s mechanically good to go I’d say NP.

Yeah, that’s a good one.

I just checked on that. It’s not required on vehicles over 20 years old (at all!) but of course, this one doesn’t make the cut. I can buy it without a title and apply for one, but will be denied if there’s any kind of lien. I also don’t intend to register it, so... I probably wouldn’t apply for a title at all. I would of course have a bill of sale, and I would have to feel out the owner about his resp onse to “what happened with the title?”

For a plow truck why not go older/simpler? I could be wrong but that seems like a lot of truck for a pl ow truck

Since you’re not going to register it, not getting a title is probably ok, but eventually you’ll want to get rid of the truck and that would be easier if you had it. When I bought my Camaro it didn’t have a title either (it was supposed to be a parts car so I didn’t care ) but it wasn’t a big deal to get it.

They don’t do titles in NH for cars >20 years old. It’s odd but that’s how they do it, I don’t understand it either.

You’re right, but it won’t require one by the time I do get rid of it - anything over 20 doesn’t require it.

Been a long time since I’ve seen a Fisher Snow Plow of course living in the south the last 30 years hasn’t helped. Is it still le
gal to put a homemade wooden
bed on your truck up there and register it?

Just harder to find in running condition. Plenty of “ran when parked” sitting in a field or else roadworthy and asking $4k. This kind of truck is in a sweet spot of “not old enough to be interesting or worth saving” and when they need significant body work, the values are quite low.
But you’re right that older/simpler would be better, in terms of fixing it in my driveway by myself, or even just the likelihood of going wrong.

Ah, I misunderstood. I thought you meant anything older than a 2000 model year didn’t need one instead of a flat 20 years old. Yeah, you should be fine.

I misunderstood him, not surprising for me on a Monday morning. I thought he meant that anything 2000 or newer needed a title. Instead it’s like you said, a flat 20 years old.

So after a year of not titling/registering it, it won’t matter anyway?

Oh hell yeah it is! There are quite a few around, some more... creative... than others.

I lived in a Paper Mill town now long gone of course, the beds were made of anything laying around in the mill’s Scrap pile and whatever cheap
lumber was being cut by the local saw mill.

20 years old is already pretty old. He might not need an F-350, but that should be near the bottom of the depreciation curve, or at least on a pretty flat part of it (I mean it’s a runner for $2000, it doesn’t have too much room to go down).

Why doesn’t it pass inspection? Do they get you for body rust, or does it have penetrating frame rust to go along with that?

A $2k 4wd truck with no title would be guaranteed to be be stolen down here.

I don't know..... And don't worry about that screwdriver I use as a key. Did I say 2k, I meant 1500....
